Villa Job
Friuli, Italy
The Villa Job vineyard is located at 90 meters above sea level on the Friuli Pozzuolo plateau, known as 'the Hills' or 'the Terraces' by geologists. It is surrounded by forest and the Cormor river, creating highly complex and varied soils, including sand, silt, clay, sandstone, and marl. Classic Friuli varietals are planted here, including Pinot Grigio, Sauvignon, Ribolla, Tocai, Refosco, and Schioppettino. The 6-hectare vineyard has been passed on from generation to generation and is now run by Alessandro and his wife Lavinia.
I met Alessandro this November when we came in for a tasting at No Saint. In the middle of the tasting, as one of our cooks was finishing up our red sauce, he nudged our wine rep and said, ‘LOOK! THAT’S RED SAUCE.’ Take note: when you see red sauce, you should pause all serious conversations.
‘Refosco’ is a high-acid red with beautiful silky red-fruits that makes it perfect for pizza. The ‘Pinot Gris: Two Ways’ is our Orange Wine 101 class! ‘Piantagrane’ is dry Pinot Gris with minerality with notes of white flowers, peaches, and wild herbs. ‘Guastafeste’ is skin-macerated Pinot Gris. Aromatic, dried fruit, and roasted almonds. Same grape, vineyard, but yielding two different expressions!
