L’absurde Génie des Fleurs
Languedoc, France
L’absurde Génie des Fleurs’ - the absurd Genius of flowers. Without flowers, there are no grapes, and therefore, no wine. The Languedoc-based natural wine project by young winemakers Tom & Miha. The couple's first harvest was in 2016, starting by purchasing organically farmed grapes from friends like Julien Peyras. While making "negociant" cuvées, they were also farming a small plot of vines near Bédarieux in the Hérault. In 2019, they began farming 5.5 hectares of old vines located in the town of Clairac, growing Terret, Chardonnay, Cinsault, Carignan, Aramon, Mosrastel, and Mourvèdre. The vineyard is composed of clay-limestone soils less exposed to heat, which lends itself to the juicy and joyful quality of the wines. Tom and Miha produce about ten cuvées per year. Miha’s mother is Romanian, and many of the cuvées’ names are inspired by her native tongue. They press their grapes delicately using a small manual press. The vinifications are non-interventional, and bottlings are made without added sulfites. The wines of Absurde Génie des Fleurs are lively and ethereal. ‘Ciulin’ is a blend of Terret Blanc & Terret Gris — slightly funky with beautiful aromas of citrus, herbal apricot, and dried tropical fruit notes. We want to invite all our friends to the bowling alley and pour this into solo cups in the bathroom.
